The Téresys Foudation attended the 10th African Union Summit held in Addis Ababa from the 31st of January to the 2nd of February 2008. The Summit was attended by the Heads of States and the Government ministers of the African Union member States and some referents of the European Commission. The discussion during the three-days summit focussed on the theme “Industrial Development in Africa”.

In his opening speech, the outgoing Chairperson of the African Union
Commission, Professor Alpha Oumar Konare, addressed a number of issues
which he described as crucial for the development of the continent. He
also highlighted some of the challenges facing the African population
today. Some of the issues addressed include: the role of the youths in
Africa, climate change, reinforcement of partnership, integration, the
principle of non-indifference and peace and security within the
continent. Professor Konare however regretted some of the existing
conflicts within the continent caused by what he referred to, as poor
governance. He therefore emphasised on the need for African countries
to respect the rules and principles of democracy.
Moreover, the agenda of the summit foresaw the election of the
chairperson and the deputy chairperson of the African Union commission.
Mr. Jean Ping was elected with a two thirds majority vote of the
Assembly in conformity with the African Union rules of procedure in
matters of elections for a four-year mandate at the helm of the Au
Commission. He will be replacing the outgoing Chairperson of the
Commission, Professor Alpha Oumar Konaré, from the Republic of Mali,
who has been at the head of the African Union Commission from September
2003 up to date.
On another note, Kenyan born Mr. Erastus Mwencha was elected as the
Deputy Chairperson of the African Union commission to replace Mr.
Patrick Mazimhaka, from the Republic of Rwanda. |
